The first match of the season was away to Sidmouth and resulted in a draw. Lovely sunny day and I am told that playing in shirtsleeves made a nice change.
Congratulations to Thea Durbin, Yvonne Alford and Donna Pearse for their wins and to Pat Greenfield, team captain, for her draw.
Good result bearing in mind that the other team all had lower handicaps and 3 of our team were hit by the maximum handicap rule of 28, introduced this season.

Back to Stableford this week and still some soggy conditions underfoot.
County Stableford 3 on the 5th May went to Amanda Winsor with 35 points from Kate Blake on 34 points and Michelle Underwood with 33. Close game girls.
County Stableford 4 on the 9th May went to Anne Woodger on 31 points from Pat Greenfield on 29 points.
These two competitions combine for the Maggie Downes trophy which went to Amanda Winsor.

Shaun Evans and Ross Gardner won Saturday’s Greensomes competition with an excellent 45 points. Mark Spry-Phare and Mark Welland were 2nd with 43 points ahead of Rich and Paul Stevens on 42. Charles Wray with Keith Lovelock finished in 4th with 40 points ahead of Keith Hoskins and Pete Denning on count back.

An assortment of news this week due to the weather conditions.
County Stableford 1 was played on the 14th April and honours went to Anne Woodger on 33 points.
County Stableford 2 was played on the 18th April and honours went to Pat Greenfield on 21 points, from Chris Wood on 16 points and Sue Cocks on 14 points (BF9).
These competitions combined to form the Hayman Cup, which went to our Lady Captain Anne Woodger.

Fingle Glen came out on top in a tight 2nd round match of the Parker Trophy Scratch Foursomes against Sidmouth at Honiton. The first pairing of James Urquhart and Paul Stevens won comfortable enough 3/2, but the second and 3rd pairings had to come from behind. Sandy Urquhart and Oli Cowl won the last 2 holes to win 1 up while Luke Burchell and Danny Hoskins ended all square to secure a 2 ½ - ½ match victory.

There was victory for both the men and ladies Mail on Sunday teams in the 3rd round of there respective competitions. The ladies secured a victory away at Lyme Regis by winning the first 3 matches. The men had a similarly comfortable passage into round 4 with a 4-1 home victory against Great Torrington. The ladies also enjoyed a vital away victory in the opening match of the 2012 Devon Ladies League campaign against Tiverton.

Saturday 14th April County Stableford, went to Anne Woodger with 33 points from Ellen Norton with 29 and Amanda Winsor on 27.
Monday 16th April was the Vets Spring Meeting at Ilfracombe which was attended by Bernadette Maynard, Pauline Bott, Pat Greenfield and Angela Hubble. They had a great time and Bernadette came away with the prize for best Visiting Player in Bronze Division 2.

Last week Julie undertook a 24 hour golf marathon at Fingle Glen to raise money for the ladies section and the Captain's Charity. Here is her report.
I started at 7 pm on Thursday 12th April with Donna, Jo and Luke and they played for the first 4 hours. The inaugural Kerry Jewell Memorial Trophy was played on Sunday where 84 players turned out to compete in 4 person team event with 2 scores to count. The team of Eve Andrews, Mary Smith, Ben Andrews and Martin Sterry won the competition with a phenomenal 95 points. Keith and Danny Hoskins with Luke Burchell and Donna Pearse were 2nd with 86 while Tony, Lee and Jack Jordan with Adam Pike won the prize for the best visiting team with 84. Saturday's Medal competition went to Kate Blake on a net 71 from Ellen Norton on net 74.
Wednesday's Medal competition went to Bernadette Maynard on a net 71 from Amanda Winsor on 74 and Thea Durbin on net 76.
The Clarke Trophy went to Bernadette, well done.

Saturdays competition was played in Medal format with the overall winner winning a meal for 2 at the Swans Nest Exminster. This prize, along with first place in division 2 went to Sam Holmes with an excellent nett 61. Paul Warren was 2nd with 70 ahead of Dan Brown on count back and Keith Lovelock in 4th with 71. Fingle Glen played Exeter in the 3rd round of the Mail on Sunday competition away from home and secured an emphatic 4-1 victory. James Urquhart, Luke Burchell and Jamie Hoskins all recorded 5/4 victories while Chris Tripp won on the final green. An excellent result.

Sunday saw the first trophy competition of the year in the form of the Mel Brash mixed team chalice played in glorious sunshine. The team of Amanda, Gary and Joe Winsor with Guy Hoskins kept up they’re remarkable winning run taking first place with 99 points. The team of Bernadette and Jeff Maynard with Rich Stevens and Sam Holmes came 2nd with 95 points.

The first round of the Parker Trophy saw Fingle play reigning champions East Devon at Exeter. After a tense match Fingle triumphed by 2 ½ - ½ and progressed to the first round proper where they will face Sidmouth at Honiton. The ladies 9 hole winter league reached its climax last week with clear winners in both the Wednesday and Saturday competitions. Anne Woodger won the Wednesday competition with 33 points ahead of Pat Greenfield in 2nd with 29, Angela Hubble and Chris Wood finished in tied 3rd position with 25. Michelle Underwood won Saturdays event with a cumulative points total of 32. Anne Woodger completed a successful winter campaign finishing 2nd with 26 ahead of Ann Hazelwood in 3rd with 19.
